Added to the City of Hammond Indiana railroad collection in 1976, a bay window caboose. #1062 was once owned by the Chicago South Shore & South Bend railroad--

The NWIRPS railroad research department has thusfar shown that 1062 was a home built caboose, constructed by the South Shore at their shops located in Michigan City Indiana.

On the outside while viewing from ground level, the 1062 looks solid, in good condition. The interior, on the other hand, shows otherwise--

Much of the roof has disappeared; interior wooden framing, slatting and floor decking has since rotted, crumbled away.

With huge sections of the floor deck missing, one can easily view the supporting steel frame, caboose trucks, underbody components--

The 1062 needs a lot of help, it is projected that this caboose will become the first NWIRPS item slated for restoration.
